### Research Interests In the human brain, there are 100 billion nerve cells and trillions of connections between them. Outside of the brain, there are hundreds of millions of neurons connecting the brain to the limbs and different organs. Understanding the complex and dynamic nervous systems requires new technologies. We are focusing on developing new probes, primarily based on nanoscale devices and soft materials, to form a precise, robust, and biocompatible interface to stimulate and/or sense signals from many individual neurons. In combination with electricity, light, acoustic or magnetic fields, the probes allow us to precisely examine and manipulate the neural circuits without inducing significant side effects. Examples of our work include a soft microelectronic sensor that can interface with the soft brain and gut for neurotransmitter sensing; a morphable neuromodulator that can accommodate tissue growth for chronic neuromodulation in the pediatric population. Such new neuroscience tools will enable yet unimagined discoveries and applications.
